About Us

Established in 1994, we are your local drinking water treatment plant serving the cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee.

The Negaunee/Ishpeming Water Authority Board is a five-member board. The board is made up of city appointed members as follows:

- Two representatives from the City of Negaunee

- Two representatives from the the City of Ishpeming

- One neutral representative appointed by the Marquette County Health Department

 

The board acts as a governing body that oversees the operations of NIWA facilities, staff, policies, and fiscal responsibilities. The board meets the third Wednesday of every month at 4:00pm at the NIWA Facility.

NIWA is a corporate public body which shall design, own, operate, and maintain a joint municipal water supply system and related facility.

Treatment

The Negaunee Ishpeming Water Authority is a modernized facility that averages roughly 1 million gallons per day from local wells. The facility has the capability to produce up to 3 million gallons per day of drinking water. The main treatment techniques involve aeration, gravity sand filtration, and chemical addition for iron and manganese removal. We are in partnership with both the City of Ishpeming and the City of Negaunee, providing clean, safe drinking water to all customers and residents.
